Optimal Influence: Coaching for Quick Change

Who do you know who needs to make a change so that they can get better, more satisfying results? You might be a coach with a full roster of clients, a manager with a team to lead, or a sales professional who needs to help clients through tricky decisions. Whatever your role, you often find yourself in this position: you have about 20 minutes to help someone see a situation differently so that they can make a better choice.

You know it’s possible to make a difference quickly, because you can think of times when someone asked you a question or opened up a new perspective that changed your own mindset and behaviour. We’ve designed  training to help you understand what happened in those situations and how to replicate them when you’re the one making a difference.

The first option is to help someone become clear. Clear thinking drives better choices and more immediate action. It’s hard to be clear because our unconscious processing of information is faster and more complex than our reasoning. Our intuition (people often call it their gut feeling) and our understanding (what we think consciously) are often out of sync. Clarity comes from bringing them into better alignment. And that alignment comes when we can see our own thoughts from outside our own feelings and preconceptions.

The first option in coaching is to reflect: to hold up a mirror to someone else’s choices and behaviours. As an outsider (you’re not in their head), you reflect back the combination of conscious and unconscious processes that you observe or uncover. That will often allow the other person to see how to align intuition and understanding so that a choice becomes clear.

The next option is to shift the mirror so that it reflects more of the situation and less of the person in the centre. This is how we reframe: we create new meaning by seeing the immediate situation in a larger context. It’s hard to see that context when you are focused on solving a problem. Someone outside the problem is not fixated on the problem. Looking around instead of focusing in will often reveal a new path towards a goal or objective.

The opposite approach is also useful. Instead of looking around the situation for possibilities, you can help someone look into their own past experience for a strength, skill or experience that will generate a new possibility. This is more than making someone feel better (sometimes the most useful resources are uncomfortable). It’s holding the belief that someone who asks for better options will find those options are already available within what they know, feel and can do.

In twenty minutes, you can choose one of these three options and use it to shift the way someone feels or understands in relation to a situation. This has the effect of shining a spotlight on the action that is most likely to make the difference they want to make. People who are clear (because you reflect), purposeful (because you reframed) or strong (because you probed for resources) will also be motivated to take the action that makes change happen.
